The President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska Dr Nenad Stevandic on the occasion of 15 September, The International Day of Democracy, said that today is an ideal occasion to stress that the Republic of Srpska is one of the last symbols of democracy in Europe because the people in the Republic of Srpska have full freedom of political, cultural, religious, and social manifestation, which is, unfortunately, becoming rare in the Europe itself, where these freedoms are being suppressed and often sanctioned.

President Stevandic said that the inviolability of the will of the people is an axiom of political activity in the Republic of Srpska, but that we often witness the fact that by pressure from some parts of the international community, the actual democratic will of the citizens of the Republic of Srpska is being violated and its chosen representatives.

He added that the Republic of Srpska will defend itself from these attacks and that institutions and organizations of the Republic of Srpska will continue to fight for the realization of their granted democratic rights.

The United Nations General Assembly brought a Decision on 15 September 2007., which declares this day as the International Day of Democracy.
